Born: London, England - 24th February 1963 Why martial arts? Early influences were the ‘Kung Fu’ TV show, Elvis Presley and seeing Bruce Lee on ‘Tiswas’ on Saturday mornings. I realise that this will only make sense to the incredibly old:-) Began training: June 1981 - Rushden Shotokan Karate Club. Between 1981 and 1987 trained in Shotokan, Kempo, Tang Soo Do, Tae-Kwon-Do, Tai Chi And Feng Shou Kung Fu.
Began Jeet Kune Do - March 1987 - Larry Hartsell seminar London.Over the following years I trained with every original Bruce Lee student that ever did a seminar in the UK: Dan Inosanto; Ted Wong; Jerry Poteet; Dan Lee; Pete Jacobs; Steve Golden and on and on. Met Linda and Shannon Lee at the Amsterdam European JFJKD Conference in 2001. September 25th 1990 - met and trained with Richard Bustillo for the first time. He has remained my teacher ever since. Apprentice Instructor awarded 1999. Associate Instructor awarded 2000 Full Instructor awarded 25th September 2001 - eleven years to the day after my initial meeting with Richard. Senior Instructor awarded 2nd October 2005 My early JKD teachers also have to be mentioned: Terry Barnett ‘87 to ‘88. Ralph Jones ‘88 - ‘92. John Harvey ‘93 to ‘96. I first met Danny Guba and Cacoy Canete in the Philippines in 1992. Danny became my teacher in 1995 and GM Cacoy in 1998. Danny awarded me my Doce Pares Black Belt in 1997 and I was awarded my 6th Grade Black Belt (Master grade) by Grandmaster Cacoy in Los Angeles in 2001. It has been my privilege to be GM Cacoy and Richard Bustillo’s main representative since 1998 and 1997 respectively. In 1990 I competed in my first Stick-fighting competition. I competed in 3 World Championships (92, 94 and 96) taking 4th, 2nd and 2nd at each event. I was British Team Captain at the ‘96 event. I also took part in the ‘93 and ‘95 European Championships - not my best events. I was the 1994 British Champion (welterweight) and the top rated fighter for my division between 1994 and 1996. I retired in 1997. In March 2001 I was the British team coach at the 1st Doce Pares World Championships held in Los Angeles. The team did fantastically well taking 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze out of 8 divisions. the only division we didn’t place it was one we didn’t have any competitors in. In total I have trained 8 world Champions, 5 European Champions and countless British and regional Champions. Since the first seminar that I hosted back in 1988 I have hosted many teachers with the desire of learning new knowledge and of exposing different methods to my students.Names that we have had teaching for us are Marco Ruas, Neil Adams, Geoff Thompson, Mo Teague, Ollie Batts, Dave Green, Percival Pableo, Ralph Jones, Terry Barnett and others. My three favourite events were the 1999 Doce Pares Conference where the teachers were GM Cacoy, GM Richard, Danny Guba and myself. A fantastic and varied group of students helped to make the event outstanding. However, even this was put into the shade by the 1st European Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Conference held in October 2000. The teachers were first generation students Richard Bustillo and Ted Wong, second generation student Chris Kent and Bruce’s archivist, author and director John Little. As well as this amazing talent the event was held in the 4 star Kettering Park Hotel, again with an international array of students. All was topped off with Andrew Staton’s rare Bruce Lee movies and documentaries. This was also the first time anywhere in the world that John Little showed clips of his then upcoming movie “Bruce Lee; A Warrior’s Journey”. In October 2003 I hosted the 1st UK IMB Conference at AG’s Martial Arts Centre. This ambitious undertaking inolved 80 students training for 24 hours over three days. The principle teachers were myself, Richard Bustillo and Johan Skalberg. We were backed by the formidable team of Danny Guba, Mo Teague, Mark Hayes, Lee Banda and Northants Police Defensive Tactics Instructor, John Cummins. After a lifetime of studying peak performance I began formal training in psychological training methods in 2000. My first exposure was to Nonviolent Communication, Dr Marshall Rosenberg’s approach to communication. This was followed rapidly with my training with Dr Richard Bandler and Paul McKenna in NLP and hypnosis. My attendance at Tony Robbins’ ‘Unleash The Power Within’ seminar in 2002 confirmed my shift in approach to martial arts and my life. I call my approach to life change ‘Success Psychology’. This, I feel, reflects the blend of NAC, NLP, NVC and martial arts philosophy that I have developed over the past 26 years.
